Scholarship for Medical Students

The Dr. Jacqueline Youtsos Scholarship honors the remarkable journey of Dr. Jacqueline M. Youtsos, MD—a Board-Certified Family Medicine physician whose personal experience, resilience, and commitment to patient-centered care have shaped her career. This annual $1,000 essay-based scholarship is open to undergraduate and medical students pursuing careers in the medical field. Inspired by Dr. Youtsos’s dedication to accessible, equitable care and her passion for serving medically underserved communities, this scholarship seeks to empower the next generation of medical professionals who are driven to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others.

Who Is It For?

This scholarship is designed to support the next generation of physicians by offering financial assistance to two distinct groups of aspiring medical professionals. First, it is open to undergraduate students at accredited U.S. colleges or university programs who are actively pursuing pre-medical tracks, such as biology or health sciences, in preparation for medical school. Second, the scholarship welcomes current medical students enrolled in accredited M.D. or D.O. programs across the United States. We are specifically looking for candidates who bring a unique perspective to the field—whether you have demonstrated a profound story of perseverance, a steadfast commitment to serving underserved communities, or have undergone personal health experiences that have deepened your resolve to practice medicine. If you possess a true passion for healing and a dedicated heart for service,

Dr Jacqueline Youtsos Scholarship for Medical Students

Long before she earned her medical degree, Jackie—as she was known—was a lakeside lifeguard in Wausau, WI, with a dream of healing others. She pursued her undergraduate studies at the University of Minnesota, then received her M.D. from the American University of the Caribbean, followed by residency training at the University of Chicago and NorthShore Family Medicine program.

During her residency, Dr. Youtsos faced an unexpected turn: she became a patient. Years of sun exposure led to a melanoma diagnosis. Instead of stepping back, she leaned in—undergoing cancer removal while simultaneously enrolling in every available elective focused on skin health and pathology. She beat cancer (the first of two times) and graduated as a Board-Certified Doctor of Family Medicine.

Dr. Youtsos later moved to New Mexico, then to Pittsburg, KS, where she founded **ReNu Medical & Spa** in a medically underserved region. She is one of the few local practitioners accepting both Medicare and Medicaid, ensuring equitable care for thousands of Southeast Kansans. A nationally recognized speaker and consultant, Dr. Youtsos now lives on Farlington Lake with her husband and daughters, splitting time between Kansas and Florida—always near the water, always caring for others.

Learn About The Dr. Jacqueline Youtsos Scholarship for Medical Students

This is more than a $1,000 award. It is a tribute to resilience.

Dr. Youtsos believes the best physicians are shaped by both their training and their trials. This essay contest invites you to reflect on a meaningful question:

**“Describe a challenge or turning point that deepened your understanding of compassionate, accessible medical care. How will that experience shape the kind of physician you intend to become?”**

One winner will receive **$1,000** to put toward tuition, books, exam fees, or living expenses. Essays are judged not on medical jargon, but on authenticity, clarity, and a demonstrated commitment to caring for others—especially those who have been overlooked.
